The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has dismissed rumours of a rift between President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, amid speculations surrounding the 2027 presidential election.
Reports had emerged suggesting that President Tinubu may be considering a different running mate should he secure the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for a second term. At one point, Vice President Shettima was allegedly barred from accessing the President at the Presidential Villa.
Adding to the speculation, the North-East leadership of the APC, led by Mustapha Salihu, recently endorsed President Tinubu for re-election without acknowledging Shettima. The omission prompted Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, to lead a protest against the endorsement, describing it as a slight on the Vice President.
Reacting to the developments, Idris maintained that only the President has the constitutional right to choose his running mate.
“The choice of a vice president lies solely with the President,” Idris said. “He has chosen Kashim Shettima, and they are working perfectly together. I’m not aware of any rift. These claims are simply speculative.”
Addressing the allegation that Shettima was once denied access to the President, Idris dismissed the reports as baseless.
“Not see the President in this country? This isn’t an Atiku-Obasanjo scenario. Tinubu and Shettima have a strong working relationship and a long-standing friendship,” he said. “Only yesterday, the Vice President represented the President at the banquet hall. He performs official duties regularly.”
Idris also questioned the credibility of the rumours: “Has Vice President Kashim Shettima ever told anyone he has issues with the President?”
The Minister urged Nigerians to disregard what he described as unnecessary noise and emphasized that the President retains full confidence in his Vice.
