A faction of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), led by Wole Adesina, has raised concerns over recent political developments it says threaten the party’s unity and integrity.
In a statement issued on Monday by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Alfa Mohammed, the group condemned what it described as a growing alliance of aggrieved politicians focused solely on removing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from office—without offering a clear vision for Nigeria’s future.
“The influx of some aggrieved politicians in a desperate coalition to ‘send President Bola Ahmed Tinubu back to Lagos,’ without showcasing any clear-cut alternative agenda for Nigeria’s transformation, is disturbing,” Mohammed said.
He emphasized that the SDP is not for sale or lease to any interest group and will not be part of any anti-government coalition lacking a defined, constructive roadmap for national development.
Distancing the faction from what it called an illegitimate coalition seeking to undermine the administration and the mandate from the 2023 general elections, the group reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with the federal government—promising to hold it accountable while promoting national stability.
The faction also urged SDP leaders across the country to reject any attempts to override their authority or manipulate party structures. It encouraged them to report such incidents to the appropriate authorities.
“We call on SDP leaders at all levels to resist any attempt to usurp their leadership and report such actions to the appropriate authorities, while leaving the party’s doors open to genuinely intentioned new members,” Mohammed added.
The Adesina-led National Executive Committee (NEC) also rejected what it called the illegal replacement of constitutionally recognized state executives by members of the coalition group in collaboration with a rival faction of the party.
Drawing parallels to a similar leadership struggle in 2019—when a group of defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Prof. Jerry Gana, attempted to seize control of the party—the faction warned against repeating past mistakes and called for internal discipline and legal adherence.
