As the 2027 presidential election approaches, former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Sam Amadi, has issued a stark warning to opposition leaders, describing President Bola Tinubu as a master of “dark politics.”
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, Amadi, who currently serves as Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, advised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and other opposition figures to reassess their strategy and unity if they hope to challenge Tinubu successfully.
Amadi argued that the opposition coalition lacks both strategic clarity and organizational strength. He noted that unlike the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the lead-up to the 2015 elections, today’s opposition is fragmented and driven by personal ambition rather than collective purpose.
“In 2015, APC leaders knew where the votes were. Buhari had a consistent support base—over nine million votes—even in defeat. There was a clear recognition of who should lead,” Amadi said. “Today, we have politicians inflating their own importance, leading to a crisis of ego. Everyone thinks it’s their turn.”
He contrasted the current opposition’s disunity with APC’s earlier effectiveness, highlighting Tinubu’s adept use of political tactics.
“Goodluck Jonathan didn’t play politics the way Tinubu does. Tinubu is a master of dark politics—calculating, persistent, and unrestrained,” he said. “The APC then engaged civil society, influenced the media, and built a focused movement. That kind of discipline is missing now.”
Amadi also pointed out that the current political environment, including a less independent electoral body, presents additional challenges for the opposition.
“We’re likely to see more infiltration, betrayals, and manipulation. This government understands the game and will play it to win,” he warned.
Criticizing the opposition’s focus on elite politics over reform, Amadi said: “There’s no unified ideology, no central vision driving the movement. Everyone is eyeing personal gain—whether in 2027 or 2031. Strategically and operationally, they are weak.”
He concluded by stressing that without a cohesive and focused campaign, the opposition may fail to present a serious challenge to President Tinubu.
