Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stands no chance of being re-elected in the 2027 general elections.
El-Rufai, now a chieftain of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), made the statement in a recent interview shared on X (formerly Twitter), stressing that anyone who believes Tinubu can secure a second term is disconnected from the realities facing Nigerians.
“Anybody that thinks it is possible for President Bola Tinubu to get re-elected is living in another country, not Nigeria. It is impossible for Bola Tinubu to get re-elected,” El-Rufai asserted.
According to him, widespread disillusionment with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and dissatisfaction with the administration’s policies have eroded public trust.
Despite the Tinubu administration’s assurances that the country’s economic hardship will soon ease, El-Rufai insists the public is unconvinced. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, recently reiterated on Channels Television that the government has laid the groundwork for economic recovery — a claim El-Rufai dismissed as insufficient to sway public opinion.
The former governor, who was once a key ally of President Tinubu, said even the weakest opposition would defeat the APC in the next election due to the level of public frustration.
“I don’t see a pathway for him. Nigerians are unhappy with the APC. The people defecting to the ruling party don’t matter,” he said.
El-Rufai described defectors as opportunists driven by greed or fear of prosecution. “Those moving to APC are either looking for contracts, appointments, or trying to avoid the EFCC or ICPC,” he alleged.
He emphasized that the SDP and its coalition are focused on voters, not politicians, adding, “The 2027 election will not be APC versus any party — it will be APC versus Nigerians.”
El-Rufai, who supported Tinubu’s 2023 bid, is now part of a growing political coalition working to unseat the president in 2027. The coalition reportedly includes other prominent figures like former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.
