Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has slammed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as a “colossal failure” on the occasion of the president’s second anniversary in office.
In a strongly worded statement posted on his official X handle on Thursday, Sowore accused Tinubu of mismanaging the economy, prioritizing the interests of the elite, and allowing worsening insecurity across the country.
“Today marks Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second year in office as President. A President who takes two years to build just 30km of the 700km Lagos-Calabar highway project is a FAILURE,” Sowore wrote.
He criticized the administration’s handling of the economy, infrastructure development, fuel subsidy removal, and national security, accusing Tinubu of failing to address the core issues affecting ordinary Nigerians.
Sowore also pointed to the sharp depreciation of the naira under Tinubu’s leadership, highlighting the steep decline in the exchange rate.
“A man who met the exchange rate at N400 and pushed it to N1,600 is a FAILURE,” he stated, referencing the widening gap between official and parallel market rates and the impact on inflation.
Addressing the controversial fuel subsidy removal, Sowore argued that the policy disproportionately affected the poor while the political elite continued to benefit from state resources.
“A man who ended petrol subsidies for low-income Nigerians but continues to subsidize corrupt government officials and lawmakers through budget padding is a FAILURE,” he said.
On the security front, Sowore accused the Tinubu administration of failing to contain the Boko Haram insurgency, claiming the group has expanded its reach from Borno and Yobe States to parts of the North Central region, including Kogi State.
“A man who met Boko Haram in Borno and Yobe but allowed them to spread to Kogi is a FAILURE,” he said.
While government spokespersons continue to highlight achievements in infrastructure development, foreign investment inflows, and fiscal reforms, critics like Sowore argue that these initiatives lack transparency and largely benefit the elite, leaving the majority of Nigerians worse off.
