Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has acknowledged the deepening crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that more members may defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking to journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday, Saraki said he remains committed to repositioning the PDP and resolving its leadership issues. He also expressed confidence that despite ongoing challenges, the PDP remains Nigeria’s only viable opposition party.
“There’s no denying the fact that some PDP members may still cross over to the APC,” Saraki admitted. “However, I also believe that some politicians from other parties may find their way to the PDP.”
The PDP has been embroiled in a prolonged leadership tussle, dating back to the build-up to the 2023 presidential election. The internal rift deepened after fallout between key party stakeholders, including former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, and the G-5 governors.
Currently, the party is facing another power struggle over who should occupy the office of National Secretary.
To address these issues, the PDP recently established a reconciliation committee led by Saraki. He revealed that the committee has been engaging in consultations aimed at healing the party’s internal divisions.
“I’ve taken it upon myself to give my best to help resolve these issues,” Saraki said. “We’re already seeing positive responses from colleagues who are willing to settle our differences.”
He assured party members across the country that efforts are ongoing to stabilize the PDP.
“We are committed to rescuing the party and rebuilding it stronger. The work is not easy, but we are confident that we’ll overcome the current challenges,” he added.
