The leadership crisis within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State took a dramatic turn on Wednesday as the embattled state chairman, Alphonsus Eba, was formally removed from office by the party’s State Executive Committee (SEC).
Eba’s impeachment followed mounting pressure from multiple factions within the party, who had repeatedly demanded his resignation over allegations of poor leadership, divisive politics, and failure to unify the party ahead of forthcoming electoral activities. Despite weeks of internal agitation, Eba reportedly refused to step down, prompting the SEC to invoke its constitutional powers.
In his place, the committee appointed Ntufam Ekum Ojogu as the acting chairman. Ojogu is expected to oversee the party’s operations pending the conduct of a state congress where his position will be formally confirmed or reassigned.
According to party officials, the move is in accordance with Section 17(6) of the APC Constitution, which empowers the State Executive Committee to install an acting chairman when the substantive chairman is removed or leaves office for any reason.
Party stakeholders say the latest development signals an attempt to stabilise the APC in Cross River State after months of internal friction and power tussles. With Ojogu now at the helm, the party is expected to begin reconciliation efforts and prepare for upcoming political engagements.
