The African Democratic Congress has bdescribed the unfolding crisis in Venezuela as a warning to authoritarian leaders and election manipulators across the world.
In a statement issued on Monday, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s interim national publicity secretary, said the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro highlights growing global resistance to illegitimate governments and compromised electoral processes.
Maduro and his wife were arrested over the weekend during a United States military operation authorised by President Donald Trump. The couple were later flown to New York to face charges related to drug trafficking and illegal arms dealings.
While reaffirming its support for national sovereignty and non interference in the internal affairs of countries, the ADC argued that the public celebrations that followed Maduro’s arrest revealed the depth of discontent among Venezuelans.
According to the party, the scenes on the streets exposed what it described as the moral and political collapse of Maduro’s administration. The ADC said international principles such as sovereignty should not be used to shield tyranny, electoral fraud or the denial of citizens’ right to freely choose their leaders.
The party recalled that the 2024 Venezuelan presidential election was widely criticised by several Latin American governments, the European Union and global democratic institutions. These groups reportedly raised concerns over fraud, repression and the exclusion of opposition candidates from the process.
The ADC also linked the Venezuelan situation to widespread migration that has destabilised parts of the region, noting that the crisis reflects a deeper failure of governance.
While acknowledging that the United States intervention raises serious questions under international law, the party said the massive public approval seen in Venezuela points to a legitimacy crisis that cannot be ignored.
Turning its attention to Nigeria, the ADC criticised the Federal Government for failing to respond to the developments in Venezuela. Abdullahi described the silence of the Bola Tinubu administration as embarrassing and indicative of Nigeria’s declining influence on the global stage.
He argued that Nigeria’s absence from international conversations on democracy and accountability undermines its status as Africa’s largest democracy. According to him, the silence reflects a moral crisis that weakens the government’s credibility to speak on democratic values.
The ADC maintained that sovereignty must ultimately reflect the will of the people and not merely the survival of those in power. It added that democracy should go beyond elections to include freedom, fairness and improved living conditions for citizens.
The party concluded that the Venezuelan crisis serves as a reminder that contrived mandates and authoritarian rule will increasingly face global scrutiny.
