The Federal Government has unveiled a major intervention plan worth over N250 billion to address the persistent shortage of student accommodation in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this in Abuja on Wednesday during the inauguration of governing board chairmen and members of agencies under the Federal Ministry of Education, alongside newly appointed and reappointed heads of federal institutions.
Alausa described the initiative as the largest single-year investment in hostel infrastructure in the country’s history, noting that the intervention was approved by President Bola Tinubu under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to the minister, at least 50 tertiary institutions will each receive N2 billion through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund for the construction of new hostels expected to provide a minimum of 500 bed spaces per institution.
“We are spending N2 billion each to build hostel accommodation in at least 50 tertiary institutions. The N2 billion will deliver 500 bed spaces to each of these institutions. These funds have been mobilised via TETFund,” he said.
He further revealed that an additional N80 billion would be invested through Public-Private Partnerships to develop between 1,200 and 1,500 bed spaces across 24 federal tertiary institutions.
Under the arrangement, TETFund will provide N1 billion counterpart funding for each project, while private partners will contribute N3 billion, bringing the total investment per institution to N4 billion.
Alausa said the ongoing reforms in the education sector are focused on expanding access, improving quality, integrating technology, and aligning educational outcomes with national development goals.
He urged the newly inaugurated board members and institutional leaders to ensure accountability, transparency, and strategic leadership in managing public resources and implementing government policies.
The minister also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to repositioning education as a key driver of national development through sustained investment in infrastructure and human capital.
Among those inaugurated were Babatunde Salako as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Board for Technical Education, and Modupe Adelabu as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Examinations Council.
Others include Bongfa Bonfa as Rector of Federal Polytechnic Nyak-Shendam and Tijani Kalli as Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Agriculture and Entrepreneurship.
