Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised calls for the opposition to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, describing the move as politically unwise and misleading.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olusola Sanni, Atiku argued that the opposition should focus on competence, national unity, and electoral strategy rather than regional considerations. He warned that presenting another southern candidate against President Bola Tinubu could weaken the opposition’s chances, noting that no incumbent Nigerian president has ever been defeated by a challenger from the same geopolitical region.
Atiku also questioned the fairness of continued southern leadership, pointing out that the South would have spent significantly more years in power than the North by 2027. He accused some politicians of selectively defending zoning principles only when it suits their ambitions.
Meanwhile, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso expressed support for retaining the presidency in the South ahead of the 2027 elections. During an interview on Arise TV, Kwankwaso stated that opposition leaders had agreed on backing a southern candidate to preserve political balance and national unity.
Kwankwaso also signaled his readiness to serve as running mate to former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi if chosen by the opposition coalition. He described Obi as a credible partner capable of delivering effective leadership and insisted that Nigerians, especially young people, were more interested in competent governance than ethnic or regional politics.
He added that the growing alliance between the Kwankwassiya and Obidient movements was gaining support nationwide as citizens increasingly seek change due to economic hardship, insecurity, and dissatisfaction with the current administration.
