President Bola Tinubu and President Paul Kagame have agreed to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and Rwanda during a meeting held on Wednesday evening in Kigali.
According to a statement from presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, both leaders met at the Urugwiro Presidential Villa shortly after Tinubu arrived in Rwanda for the Africa CEO Forum.
During the discussions, the two presidents stressed the need to revive the Joint Permanent Ministerial Commission (JPMC), an agreement established in 2021 to promote cooperation between both nations. They also agreed that Nigeria would host the next session of the commission.
On consular relations, President Tinubu said Nigeria would carefully consider introducing a 30-day visa-free entry policy for Rwandan citizens, mirroring Rwanda’s existing visa-free arrangement for Nigerians as part of broader African integration efforts.
The leaders also reviewed pending Memoranda of Understanding covering tourism, anti-corruption cooperation, and the fight against illicit drugs, reaffirming their commitment to stronger continental partnerships and shared development.
In addition, both presidents exchanged views on improving the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement between their countries.
Nigeria is also exploring a partnership with RwandAir to expand export opportunities for Nigerian businesses across Africa, following the establishment of an air cargo corridor with Uganda Airlines last year.
The two-day Africa CEO Forum is scheduled to begin on Thursday in Kigali.
