The remains were found in a shallow grave inside Umudike Forest, a known hideout used by the criminals.
According to the army, Chief Anyadu was killed by suspected members of a gang recently arrested in connection with a series of violent crimes across the region. The breakthrough followed intelligence-led operations that earlier resulted in the arrest of suspects linked to the killing of a Nigerian Army soldier and the recovery of stolen service weapons.
During questioning, one of the detained men admitted involvement in the community leader’s murder and offered to guide troops to the burial site. On 2 August 2026, the suspects led soldiers to the location within the forest, where the remains were carefully recovered.
