Panic has engulfed the Umulogho community in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State after a female student of the College of Nursing, Umuadara Umulogho, identified as Wendy Achumba, was found brutally murdered in her room.
The shocking discovery was made on Thursday evening when neighbours, concerned that the student had not been seen all day and failed to respond to repeated calls, forced their way into her apartment. They reportedly found her lifeless body with the head severed.
According to community sources, the deceased, who hailed from Ngwa in Abia State, had completed her midwifery programme and was undergoing post-basic training at the institution.
A resident who spoke anonymously disclosed that the room was still locked from the inside when neighbours broke in, while the victim’s mobile phone was missing from the scene.
Another resident, identified simply as Ike, described the incident as horrifying, noting that the student had been seen alive the previous day.
“We are still in shock. Nobody knows who committed the crime or the motive behind it. Her room was locked from the inside, and although there were fears of possible sexual assault, it was later dismissed. However, her phone could not be found,” the resident said.
The incident has thrown both residents and students of the College of Nursing into fear and confusion. Tension reportedly escalated after angry youths confronted police officers who arrived at the scene.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, DSP Henry Okoye, said the police had commenced investigations into the gruesome killing.
He stated that officers, including the Divisional Police Officer and other operatives, visited the scene immediately after receiving the report, recovered the body, and deposited it in the morgue.
Okoye assured members of the public that efforts were underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding the murder and bring those responsible to justice.
