Romuald Wadagni has officially assumed office as the new president of Benin, succeeding his former boss and predecessor, Patrice Talon, after winning the April 12 presidential election with 94 percent of the vote.
The 49-year-old economist, widely regarded as a technocrat and a symbol of continuity from Talon’s administration, pledged during his inauguration in Cotonou to lead the country with integrity, courage, and commitment.
Wadagni, who served for a decade as finance minister, inherits a nation that has recorded strong economic growth over the past ten years but still faces deep inequality and rising insecurity in its northern region linked to jihadist attacks.
During his inauguration speech, the new president promised to strengthen national security and confront extremist threats, particularly those linked to the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM).
Under a recent constitutional reform, Wadagni will serve a seven-year term, replacing the previous five-year mandate, with presidents limited to a maximum of two terms.
He is also expected to work on improving relations with neighbouring junta-led countries, including Niger and Burkina Faso, both of which continue to battle Islamist insurgencies.
