The United States has warned that it is fully prepared to resume military action against Iran if ongoing peace negotiations fail, as President Donald Trump insists that any agreement must meet key American demands, including preventing Tehran from ever developing nuclear weapons.
Although the White House had indicated that a preliminary deal might be close after weeks of difficult negotiations, Iran dismissed reports that a final agreement had been reached to end the conflict, which has shaken the Middle East and affected the global economy.
Speaking at a major defence summit in Singapore, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth stressed that Washington retains the capability to restart military operations if necessary. He said American forces remain well-equipped and strategically positioned across the region and around the world.
The diplomatic process suffered a setback following recent US strikes on Iran’s southern port of Bandar Abbas and Iran’s retaliatory response. Despite the escalation, negotiations have continued, including discussions linked to ending hostilities in Lebanon, which Iran insists must be part of any comprehensive settlement.
Trump reiterated that any deal must guarantee that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons and that the strategically important Strait of Hormuz is reopened without restrictions. A White House official emphasized that the president would only approve an agreement that aligns with US interests and his stated conditions.
Iran, however, rejected what it described as Washington’s attempts to dictate terms. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei stated that Iran would not accept demands imposed by the United States and maintained that no final agreement had been concluded.
Disagreements also remain over the release of frozen Iranian assets, the future of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles, and conditions surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian sources disputed several of Trump’s claims, describing them as inaccurate and absent from the current negotiation framework.
Meanwhile, fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon continues despite previous ceasefire efforts. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced further advances by Israeli forces, while Hezbollah reported attacks on Israeli positions. Direct talks between Israel and Lebanon are ongoing, with another round expected in Washington next week.
As both Washington and Tehran continue exchanging messages, uncertainty remains over whether diplomacy can succeed or whether tensions could once again escalate into open conflict.
