The Nigeria Police Force has cautioned Nigerians against carrying out retaliatory attacks on South African citizens, businesses, diplomatic missions, or other South African interests in the country following reports of xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians in South Africa.
The warning comes amid rising concerns that the reported incidents could spark reprisals and threaten public order in Nigeria.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, security and intelligence agencies reviewed the situation during a Joint Intelligence Board meeting held on May 18, 2026, under the leadership of the National Security Adviser.
The police stated that the Federal Government is actively engaging South African authorities and other relevant stakeholders through diplomatic, intelligence, and security channels to address the matter peacefully and safeguard the interests of Nigerians both at home and abroad.
While acknowledging public outrage over the reported attacks, the Force stressed that citizens must not take the law into their own hands. It warned that acts of violence, intimidation, property destruction, hate speech, or any form of reprisal are illegal and will be dealt with according to the law.
The statement emphasized that Nigeria is governed by the rule of law and that all individuals legally residing in the country, regardless of nationality, are entitled to protection and security.
The police further warned that any attempt to target South African nationals, businesses, diplomatic facilities, or lawful interests within Nigeria would be treated as a criminal offence and prosecuted accordingly.
Citizens were also urged to avoid spreading unverified, provocative, or inflammatory information, especially on social media, as such content could escalate tensions and undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.
To prevent any breakdown of law and order, the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security and intelligence agencies, has intensified surveillance and strengthened security around critical national infrastructure, foreign missions, and other strategic locations across the country.
The Force added that adequate security personnel have been deployed to ensure the protection of lives and property.
Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining peace and public safety, the police assured Nigerians that it remains dedicated to preserving law and order, protecting lives and property, and safeguarding national security. Citizens were encouraged to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding while going about their lawful activities without fear.
