The Independent National Electoral Commission has reinstated 66 candidates for the 2027 governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections after reviewing petitions against its final list of candidates.
National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, said in a statement issued on Thursday that the commission received complaints over the omission of political parties, the wrongful inclusion of candidates whose names did not appear on their parties’ membership registers, and alleged multiple nominations.
The final lists had been published on 10 October 2026. Three days later, INEC issued a statement promising to examine all petitions. After reviewing the complaints against relevant records and legal provisions, the commission found merit in some representations and approved the inclusion of the affected candidates and their parties. Petitions found to lack merit were rejected.
Some names that had been wrongly published were removed after verification showed they were not on their party registers. Other candidates were dropped for failing to meet legal requirements for nomination.
For the governorship election, INEC received 69 petitions from 12 political parties across 26 states. Forty-one of those petitions succeeded and 28 failed. For the state Houses of Assembly, 61 petitions came from 11 parties across 11 states, with 25 succeeding and 36 failing.
The commission said the affected candidates, parties and states would be reflected in the updated list on its website. It reiterated its commitment to transparency and the credibility of the electoral process.
