Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress presidential candidate, has rejected the Ekiti State Police Command’s description of an incident in which he was injured at a restaurant in Ado-Ekiti, insisting he and his associates were attacked by suspected political thugs.
Sowore sustained injuries in the episode on Friday around the Dalimore area of the state capital. The police said officers were alerted, mobilised to the scene, rescued him and took him to the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti for medical attention. The command described the injuries as minor.
In a post on X, Sowore accused the police of downplaying what he called a coordinated, violent attack. He rejected the official characterisation of the events as an altercation and said the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye Michael, had visited him in hospital, seen the extent of the injuries and the aftermath of the violence, yet the command still issued a statement treating the matter lightly.
“THERE WAS NO ALTERCATION! WE WERE ATTACKED!” Sowore wrote. He accompanied the post with a video that he said showed the commissioner leaving a hospital emergency room after the visit.
Earlier, Sowore had posted that he had been kidnapped by armed thugs and that his whereabouts were unknown. The police promptly dismissed that claim.
In a statement, the command’s public relations officer, Sunday Abutu, said preliminary information indicated Sowore had an altercation with some individuals at the restaurant. Officers rescued him after being alerted. The Commissioner of Police has ordered a discreet investigation to establish the circumstances, identify those involved and bring anyone found culpable to justice.
The police urged the public to disregard reports of a kidnapping and to avoid circulating unverified information that could cause panic. The command restated its commitment to protecting lives and property in the state regardless of political affiliation or status.
