The Labour Party on Friday called on Nigerians to draw inspiration from Brazil and back its candidates in the 2027 general elections, after congratulating President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election for a fourth term.
In a statement issued in Abuja by National Publicity Secretary Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party said Lula’s win showed the confidence Brazilian voters still place in a government rooted in social democracy. Asogwa noted that the Labour Party and Lula’s Workers’ Party share the same ideological foundation.
“Our shared beliefs and political philosophy, firmly rooted in social democracy, have continued to bring our paths together in many respects,” he said.
Asogwa pointed to Abia State, governed by Labour Party’s Alex Otti, as evidence that the party can deliver. He described Otti’s leadership as transformational and said it demonstrated the party’s capacity and understanding of Nigerians’ needs.
The party argued that its social-democratic heritage offers Nigeria a path that prioritises welfare, social justice, economic inclusion and equitable development. “We firmly believe that Nigeria stands to gain immensely from having the Labour Party provide leadership across all tiers of government, including the presidency,” Asogwa stated.
He urged voters to remain confident in the party’s vision. “The Brazilian experience has demonstrated the power of the people to shape their political destiny through the ballot. The same is possible in Nigeria, because people power is greater than political power,” he added.
Lula, a leftist and social democrat, secured another term as president of South America’s most populous country and largest economy.
