At least two police officers have been killed in a fresh attack by unidentified gunmen in Anambra State, raising concerns about a possible resurgence of violent crime in the region.
The attack occurred on Sunday night along the Awa-Ndiukwuenu-Ufuma Road, where the assailants reportedly ambushed a police patrol team and opened fire on the officers. Two policemen were said to have been killed during the incident, with their bodies left on the road.
An eyewitness, a commercial tricycle operator, recounted that he was travelling along the route when he suddenly heard gunshots ahead. Fearing for his safety, he abandoned his tricycle and fled into a nearby bush.
According to him, after the gunfire subsided, he returned to the road and discovered two police officers lying on the ground beside their patrol vehicle. He said one of the officers appeared to still be alive and appealed to the authorities to urgently intervene.
The attack comes after months of relative calm in Anambra State, following intensified security operations against criminal elements, including armed groups posing as Biafra agitators.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Anambra State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, could not be reached. The command had yet to issue a statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
