The leadership tussle within the Sokoto State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) intensified on Friday as the Federal High Court adjourned the matter to July 13, 2026, for full substantive hearing.
Justice Ahmad Mahmud Gama delivered rulings on several interlocutory applications filed by the parties before fixing the new date. The case, which had been adjourned from June 4 to June 19, witnessed lengthy legal arguments that lasted several hours.
Lead counsel to the first defendant, Barrister Sulaiman Usman, SAN, told journalists after the proceedings that the court granted three key applications in part. An application for extension of time was approved in the morning session. However, the court declined to rule on a motion challenging the mode of commencement of the suit, stating that doing so could amount to determining substantive issues in the main case.
The court, however, granted the third application, ordering the plaintiff to provide further and better particulars on certain allegations contained in the court papers within seven days. The defendants will have three days to respond thereafter, while the plaintiff will be given two additional days to file any reply if necessary.
“We were able to demonstrate paragraph by paragraph that certain allegations lacked sufficient particulars,” Usman said. “The interest of justice requires that those details be supplied.”
Lead counsel to the plaintiff, Barrister Mathew Burkaa, SAN, welcomed the court’s decision and assured full compliance with the directive to furnish additional particulars.
Counsel to the second and third defendants, Barrister Shamsudeen A. Dauda, also expressed satisfaction with the outcome, particularly the order for further particulars.
The intra-party dispute, which has significant implications for the leadership structure of the ADC in Sokoto State, is now expected to enter its substantive phase on July 13. Political observers are closely monitoring the case as it could shape the future direction of the opposition party in the state.
