Nigerian troops have successfully rescued 10 National Examinations Council (NECO) candidates and teachers who were kidnapped by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists during an attack on a secondary school in Borno State.
The rescue operation was carried out by troops of Operation HADIN KAI on Monday, following an abduction that occurred around 9 a.m. while students at the Technical Secondary School in Lassa Community, Askira/Uba Local Government Area, were writing their NECO examinations.
According to a statement by the Acting Military Information Officer, Captain Mohammed Goni, the Theatre Command promptly activated a coordinated search-and-rescue mission involving ground troops, strike aircraft, and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms.
The troops tracked the terrorists to the Daggu area, where they engaged them in a fierce gun battle. Guided by aerial surveillance, the forces rescued the 10 victims unharmed. The rescued candidates and teachers are currently receiving medical care and necessary support.
Efforts are ongoing to locate and free the remaining abducted victim and to apprehend the perpetrators. During the operation, troops inflicted casualties on the terrorists and recovered seven motorcycles used in the attack.
The rescue, however, came at a cost, with one soldier from Operation HADIN KAI and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) losing their lives. The military praised their bravery and commitment to protecting civilians in the region.
The incident has been described by the military as a sign of desperation by terrorist groups facing sustained pressure from counter-insurgency operations. ISWAP has increasingly targeted soft civilian targets, including schools, amid intensified military offensives.
Operation HADIN KAI has reinforced security around vulnerable communities and schools in the area while calling on the public to remain vigilant and provide credible intelligence to security agencies.
This latest development comes as parents and student bodies continue to express concern over the safety of students in conflict-prone areas of the North-East.
