Owerri — Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has drawn a bold parallel between President Bola Tinubu and Singapore’s founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, describing the Nigerian leader as a transformative figure capable of turning around the nation’s fortunes.
The governor made the remarks on Saturday at a state dinner in Owerri, which concluded a three-day national media tour by the Renewed Hope Ambassadors and the Presidential Communications Team. The tour focused on key federal and state government projects in Imo.
“In President Bola Tinubu, we have another Lee Kuan Yew,” Uzodimma declared, according to a statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity for the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Mr. Tunde Rahman.
Lee Kuan Yew is widely credited with transforming Singapore from a poor, resource-scarce British colony into one of the world’s most prosperous economies. The Imo governor praised Tinubu for implementing bold economic reforms since assuming office on May 29, 2023, saying the president had come prepared to tackle Nigeria’s deep-rooted challenges.
“The old order is gone and there is now a new order,” Uzodimma said. He likened Nigeria’s pre-reform economic struggles to the biblical bondage of the Israelites in Egypt, arguing that tough but necessary decisions were required to break the cycle of stagnation.
While acknowledging the short-term hardships faced by citizens due to the reforms, the governor pointed to positive outcomes, including increased revenue allocations to states that have enabled greater investment in infrastructure,
healthcare, education, and technology.
“Everything we are doing in Imo today is made possible because of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said, citing projects such as the Imo Digital City, the 2,000-bed Infectious Disease Centre, the Heart Transplant Centre, and the University of Innovation, Science and Technology.
Uzodimma expressed strong confidence that Nigerians would reward President Tinubu with a second term in 2027 as the benefits of the reforms become more visible.
Veteran journalist Dr. Soni Daniel, speaking on behalf of the visiting media team, commended Governor Uzodimma for what he described as remarkable progress in infrastructure and economic development, noting prudent management of public resources.
President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, also lauded the Imo governor for effectively implementing the Renewed Hope Agenda and fostering strong federal-state collaboration.
