The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has restated its dedication to advancing women’s economic empowerment and gender equality through targeted capacity-building programmes in agriculture, entrepreneurship and international trade.
The pledge was made during the 2026 International Women’s Day celebrations held in Owerri, Imo State. The Commission outlined plans to broaden opportunities for women across the Niger Delta region.
Dr. Kyrian Uchegbu, Imo State Representative on the NDDC Board, announced the launch of an Agricultural Investment Fund specifically for women. He emphasised that beneficiaries would undergo preparatory training to ensure effective use of the funds.
“This International Women’s Day training for Imo State women is a preparatory programme in view of what the NDDC is ready to do for them. If we do not prepare them before they access the funds, they may not get it right,” Uchegbu said. The training aims to equip women with skills needed for the Commission’s intervention programmes, including the export of agro-based products.
Mr. Patrick Obayelu, NDDC Director of the Imo State Office, described the day as both a celebration of women’s achievements and a moment for reflection on advancing gender equality and inclusive development.
He noted women’s vital contributions to leadership, governance, education, business, science, healthcare and community development, stressing that collaboration among governments, institutions and stakeholders is essential for removing barriers facing women and girls.
Participants received practical sessions on export readiness from Mr. Anthony Aguruchi of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and on business growth and sustainability from Dr. Solomon Edebiri, Board Secretary of the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines and Agriculture (NDCCITMA).
One beneficiary, Mrs. Nkiruka Nwosu, said the programme provided useful knowledge for managing staff and finances in her interior decoration business.
At a parallel event in Umuahia, Mrs. Ahunna Imoni, NDDC Director of Youths and Women Affairs, reiterated the Commission’s commitment to enabling women to excel across economic sectors. She highlighted the resilience and industriousness of Niger Delta women and urged them to build sustainable businesses, understand their rights and pursue equal opportunities, noting that women’s empowerment strengthens families, communities and regional development.
Imo State Commissioner for Health and Social Services, Dr. Chioma Egu, praised the NDDC for organising the programme and creating avenues for women to gain knowledge that supports personal and business growth.
