The Imo State Police Command has reactivated Operation Velvet statewide, following a directive from Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
The initiative, announced by Command Public Relations Officer DSP Henry Okoye, seeks to strengthen traffic law enforcement, improve road safety, ensure compliance with traffic regulations, and maintain free vehicular movement across the state.
Operation Velvet will target serious offences, including reckless and dangerous driving, driving against traffic, excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking, traffic obstruction, illegal parking, driving without valid licences or documents, use of unregistered vehicles or those without number plates, fake or concealed plates, serious overloading, and unauthorised use of sirens.
Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso has ordered all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, the State Traffic Officer, and other operational commanders to draw up and implement appropriate operation orders. He directed that deployed personnel must be properly briefed and closely supervised to ensure the exercise is conducted professionally, lawfully, and with respect for the public’s rights and dignity.
Bosso warned that the operation must not become a platform for extortion, harassment, intimidation, or any form of misconduct. Officers found engaging in corrupt practices or abuse of office will face disciplinary action under existing police regulations.
The command urged motorists and other road users to obey traffic laws and cooperate with officers. Members of the public were cautioned against offering bribes to evade enforcement and encouraged to report any cases of extortion or harassment through official channels.
Authorities assured residents that Operation Velvet will be carried out with professionalism, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law, while seeking the continued cooperation of all road users to promote safer roads and smoother traffic flow in Imo State.
