Rotimi Amaechi, vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, has said he will resign if Nigerians do not begin to feel a difference within a year of an ADC administration taking office.
Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, Amaechi tied the pledge to the party’s priorities for the 2027 election: security, education and the economy. He said those three areas would have to be addressed before the country could make progress, and that cutting corruption would be necessary to free money for them.
“If Nigeria does not begin to change, one year after we have come to office, come to me, I will resign,” he said.
He drew a distinction between wholesale transformation and a change people could notice. “I didn’t say Nigeria must change or that everything must change. But even if you feel the change, you have a breath of fresh air,” he said.
The former minister of transportation argued that public funds meant for development were being diverted. “And to do all that, corruption will have to come down because there is no money for anybody to steal,” he said. “The reason why these things are not being done is that the money that will be used to fund these things are in private pockets.”
Amaechi also criticised the removal of the petrol subsidy under President Bola Tinubu, saying the policy had not improved living conditions. He pointed to poverty and hunger, and to spending at social events, and questioned who was behind imports of finished goods. “Going by how high poverty is in Nigeria, now we import over 46 percent of finished goods. Who are those importing it? Nigeria is in trouble,” he said.
He claimed he had watched people hoot at Tinubu on the drive from Lagos International Airport to the president’s residence, and said an ADC government would not draw that reaction.
“If we become president, nobody will do that. They will be clapping for us because we will change Nigeria,” he said.
