US President Donald Trump has urged Congress to pass legislation imposing mandatory minimum prison sentences on people convicted of defrauding Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, while also proposing personal financial liability for state and local politicians who knowingly fail to stop such fraud.
In a video posted on Truth Social on Saturday, Trump said the measure would remove probation as an option for those convicted of stealing from the federal benefit programmes. He argued that offenders should face lengthy prison terms scaled according to the amount stolen, with sentences doubled for a second conviction.
“Today, I’m calling on Congress to pass legislation to address fraud in Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security programs,” Trump said. “First, Congress must impose mandatory minimum sentences on fraudsters who steal from critical benefit programs designed to take care of the sick, feed the hungry, care for our children, and protect our senior citizens, retirees.”
He added: “Under our proposal, probation is no longer an option for the fraudsters. If you steal from the American people, you will go to prison, and for a long period of time. And the more you steal, the longer you’ll stay in that prison.”
Trump further proposed that state and local politicians could be held personally liable for the full amount of losses if they knew about fraud, had the power to stop it and failed to act. He did not specify sentencing ranges or the legal standard that would establish knowledge or ability to prevent the fraud.
The proposal forms part of intensified federal efforts under the Trump administration to combat fraud in government benefit programmes. Trump said the legislation would force fraudsters and officials who ignore preventable fraud to “think long and hard” before acting.
He closed the video with a warning: “So from now on, fraudsters, we’re watching you.”
