Madonna University in Nigeria has expelled nursing students after a video they recorded inside a hospital went viral, prompting the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to urge the institution to reverse the decision.
The students faced disciplinary action once the footage circulated widely online. The video carried the caption “No sick oo, nah Gen Z full hospital.”
NANS described the students’ conduct as inappropriate and constituting misconduct. However, the association appealed to the university management to replace the expulsion with a stern warning, arguing that permanent dismissal would disrupt the students’ education and future careers.
The affected students are nursing undergraduates whose training includes clinical postings and hospital-based learning. In its appeal, NANS called on Madonna University to show clemency and allow the students to continue their studies under strict disciplinary conditions.
It suggested the students could be required to sign undertakings not to repeat such behaviour and face further sanctions if they breached the terms.
NANS said any punishment should remain corrective rather than end the students’ academic paths. The appeal comes against a backdrop of wider concern about student behaviour on social media, particularly videos filmed in sensitive settings such as hospitals.
The university has not yet publicly indicated whether it will review the expulsions or respond to the students’ appeal.
