Senate President Godswill Akpabio has instituted a ₦200 billion defamation lawsuit against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him.
The suit was filed at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja, marking a major escalation in the long-running dispute between both lawmakers.
Confirming the development in a Facebook post on Friday, Akpoti-Uduaghan said she welcomed the legal process, noting that it would finally give her an opportunity to substantiate her claims of sexual harassment.
She accused the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges of previously denying her a fair hearing, stating that the panel had refused to take up her petition because Akpabio’s wife had already filed a separate defamation case against her. She added that Senate rules required her to present her complaint to the committee before seeking judicial redress, a condition she said prevented her from approaching the courts earlier.
“Today being the 5th of December 2025, I received a newly instituted ₦200 billion suit filed by Senator Godswill Akpabio alleging defamation on sexual harassment,” she wrote.
“I am glad he has taken this route because the Ethics Committee refused to hear my complaint, citing an existing case filed by his wife. Now I have the chance to prove how I was sexually harassed and how rejecting his demands triggered persistent and unwarranted attacks against me.”
Included in her post was a copy of a court order issued by Justice U. P. Kekemeke on November 6, directing that she be served through substituted means via the clerk of the National Assembly. The matter is slated to begin on January 21, 2026.
Akpoti-Uduaghan first made the allegations in February during an interview on Arise TV, where she claimed Akpabio made sexual advances toward her both in his office and at his residence in Akwa Ibom. She alleged that she faced hostility in the Senate after rebuffing him.
Akpabio has consistently denied the accusations.
