Senator Seriake Dickson, who represents Bayelsa West, has raised concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s speech during the joint session of the National Assembly held on Thursday to mark the 2025 Democracy Day.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the president’s address, Dickson alleged that Senate President Godswill Akpabio violated his constitutional rights during the session. According to him, Akpabio hastily read through the president’s correspondence to the National Assembly and deliberately ignored his attempt to raise a constitutional issue.
“That’s not how democracy works — that’s how military regimes operate,” Dickson stated, expressing his frustration over being denied the opportunity to speak.
He emphasized that Akpabio “completely disregarded” his right as a senator to participate in the proceedings and raise critical points, calling the action undemocratic.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu’s speech has also come under fire from several Nigerians and political observers who accused him of sidelining pressing national issues. Critics said the president failed to acknowledge the hardships facing citizens and instead focused on political rhetoric, including jabs at opposition parties.
Many had expected the Democracy Day address to provide direction on the country’s security crisis and economic challenges, but were left disappointed.
