The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) on Thursday issued a Public Health Advisory to healthcare workers across the country, urging heightened preparedness against a possible outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
Although no confirmed case linked to the current regional outbreak has been recorded in Nigeria, the agency warned that the country remains at high risk of importing the virus due to increased international travel, porous borders and heavy cross-border movement within the region.
In the advisory signed by its Corporate Communications Division, the NCDC called on healthcare workers to remain vigilant and strengthen preparedness measures to ensure early detection and rapid response in the event of a suspected case.
The agency stressed the importance of risk assessment and national readiness, urging medical personnel to familiarise themselves with the early symptoms of Ebola and reinforce infection prevention protocols.
Healthcare workers were also advised to understand transmission risks and adopt measures aimed at preventing the spread of the virus within healthcare facilities and communities.
The NCDC encouraged health professionals to seek further guidance from their respective State Ministries of Health and designated public health authorities when necessary.
According to the agency, states considered to be at higher risk include Lagos, Enugu, Borno, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Taraba and Adamawa due to the presence of international airports, seaports and active border routes.
The Centre explained that the immediate goal of its preparedness efforts is to ensure that all states and the Federal Capital Territory can swiftly detect, contain and respond effectively to any suspected Ebola case.
Meanwhile, the NCDC disclosed that Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have so far recorded 1,077 suspected cases and 247 deaths linked to the outbreak, representing a fatality rate of 24.6 per cent.
