Chinese tech giant Alibaba has introduced a new artificial intelligence processor, the Zhenwu M890, which the company says delivers triple the performance of its earlier Zhenwu 810E chip. The launch comes as China intensifies efforts to strengthen its domestic semiconductor industry in response to ongoing U.S. export restrictions on advanced chips from firms such as Nvidia.
Alibaba revealed that the new chip is equipped with 144GB of GPU memory and offers interchip bandwidth of 800GB per second. The company added that over 560,000 Zhenwu chips have already been deployed across more than 400 customers in 20 industries, highlighting rising demand for its AI hardware solutions within China.
The development is expected to boost Alibaba and its chip division, T-Head, in China’s rapidly expanding AI processor market, where competitors like Huawei and Cambricon are also increasing their influence.
Myron Xie, an analyst at SemiAnalysis specializing in AI accelerators, noted that Alibaba’s AI chips are gaining traction among domestic users and are emerging as one of China’s more widely adopted AI hardware platforms. However, he pointed out that the chip’s memory capacity and bandwidth still fall behind those of top Western alternatives, while key compute performance details remain undisclosed.
The unveiling reflects China’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on foreign semiconductor technology and establish a self-reliant AI computing ecosystem. Alibaba said the chip will support advanced AI applications, including its Qwen series of large language models.
The company also announced plans to release its next-generation AI model, Qwen3.7-Max, in the near future. Earlier this year, Alibaba partnered with China Telecom to develop a new data centre in southern China powered by Alibaba-designed AI chips, further expanding its domestic AI infrastructure ambitions.
