The Anambra State government has launched a decisive crackdown on ritual killings and fraudulent spiritual practices with the enactment of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025.
Signed by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the law aims to rid the state of criminal elements operating under the guise of native doctors and spiritualists, who have been accused of promoting get-rich-quick schemes through occult practices.
The legislation specifically targets individuals labeled as evil native doctors, fake native doctors, and false prophets, declaring them unwelcome in the state. Authorities clarify that this is not an attack on traditional religion but a necessary measure to combat dangerous practices linked to ritual killings and other crimes.
One of the most alarming discoveries fueling the government’s action is the use of the Oke-ite pot, a clay vessel allegedly containing human body parts, herbs, and other ritualistic elements believed to be central to human sacrifice and money-making rituals. Other harmful practices such as Uduakomili, Ibobo, and Awale are also under scrutiny for their role in promoting fraudulent wealth acquisition.
Additionally, security forces have raised concerns over Odeshi charms, which purportedly make criminals bulletproof. These charms have been widely used by kidnappers and armed robbers, contributing to the rise in violent crime across the state. Officials warn that such practices are not only illegal but also undermine the core Igbo values of hard work, diligence, and integrity.
Historically, Igbo society has been known for its strong entrepreneurial spirit, exemplified by the Igba-boi apprenticeship system. This model, recognized even by Harvard University, has been a pillar of wealth creation through mentorship and hard work. However, in recent years, there has been a troubling shift towards instant wealth, often pursued through illegal means.
The government also blames some parents for enabling this decline in values, accusing them of funding Yahoo training schools where young people are taught internet fraud under the pretense of reclaiming wealth from the West. Critics argue that this societal decay has produced a generation more focused on extravagant lifestyles than genuine hard work.
In response, Governor Soludo’s administration has launched Operation Udo-Ga-Achi, a security initiative backed by the structured Agunechemba network, aimed at tackling crime at its roots. The program seeks to restore Anambra’s reputation as a land of industry and moral integrity.
State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, emphasized the government’s determination to eliminate criminal elements, stating that the fight is for the soul of Anambra. He urged citizens to support the enforcement of the Homeland Security Law and ensure that traditional practices are not exploited as a cover for crime.
As the government intensifies its battle against Oke-ite and other harmful rituals, the Soludo administration remains resolute in its mission to sanitize Anambra, safeguarding future generations and upholding the values that have long defined the Igbo people.
