Opposition political parties in Nigeria are stepping up discussions and strategic consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections as they seek to form a strong alliance capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, Yusuf Dantalle, revealed that political parties are actively exploring partnerships and alliances, even as preparations for party primaries and candidate nominations continue.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Dantalle explained that negotiations among opposition parties could persist even after presidential candidates have emerged. He noted that Nigeria’s political landscape allows parties to collaborate based on shared interests and regional political influence.
According to him, parties may eventually reach agreements where support is exchanged across states depending on each party’s area of strength. He stressed that such political arrangements remain possible as the 2027 elections draw closer.
His remarks come amid increasing speculation about the formation of a mega opposition coalition aimed at unseating the APC in the next presidential election.
Dantalle also disclosed that the Allied Peoples Movement and the Peoples Democratic Party currently maintain a working relationship in several parts of the country, including Oyo State.
He further claimed that Seyi Makinde had joined the APM and was pursuing a presidential ambition under the party’s platform, although he acknowledged the governor’s longstanding ties with the PDP, which supported his rise to power as a two-term governor.
On electoral matters, Dantalle urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to engage political parties in discussions regarding the implementation of a recent court judgment affecting electoral guidelines and party primaries.
He warned against unnecessary legal disputes that could create political tension ahead of the elections, emphasizing the need for collaboration between INEC and political parties to address issues surrounding the Electoral Act and the conduct of primaries before 2027.
