Fresh revelations have surfaced regarding the gruesome killing of Wendy Achumba, a student of the College of Nursing, Obowo, after one of the principal suspects, Onyema Okonkwo, was arrested in Imo State.
According to reports, Okonkwo was captured by vigilant youths in the Umuadara community of Obowo Local Government Area following an investigation coordinated by youth leader Chidiebere Iweajunwa. His arrest reportedly came after a video circulated online showing him making confessional statements linked to the crime.
Sources within the community said the victim was alone in her apartment at the time of the attack because her two roommates had travelled for their nursing practicals, leaving her by herself in the compound.
While being questioned, Okonkwo allegedly confessed that he and another suspect identified as Emmanuel approached Wendy with the intention of forcing her into sexual activity, but she resisted.
The suspect’s alleged confession has sparked widespread anger and grief across the community, with residents condemning the brutal killing and demanding immediate justice for the victim. Many have called on authorities to ensure that all those connected to the crime are arrested and prosecuted without delay.
After his arrest, Okonkwo was reportedly handed over to security agencies for further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to track down Emmanuel, who is said to be on the run.
As of the time of reporting, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, had not issued an official statement concerning the incident. The killing has continued to generate outrage across Imo State, with growing calls for accountability and stronger protection for students and women.
