Tension is mounting in Enugwu-Agidi community following the arrest of a suspected kidnapper, Chukwudi Tansi, by Governor Soludo’s Agunechemba security team.
The arrest of Tansi, a member of the Enugwu-Agidi Community Vigilante, with a cache of firearms has exposed his alleged involvement in criminal activities that have long troubled the community. However, the situation has escalated further with accusations linking the community’s traditional ruler to the unfolding security crisis.
The President General (PG) of Enugwu-Agidi, Hon. Chukwuebuka Onuorah, has directly accused the traditional ruler, HRH Mike Okekeuche, of appointing Tansi to the vigilante group despite prior warnings about his criminal background.
Speaking to journalists, Onuorah claimed he had alerted authorities, including the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), about the security threats posed by Tansi and his alleged possession of illegal firearms.
He further revealed that he had been personally targeted, alleging that unknown armed men, acting on orders from the traditional ruler, invaded his residence in March 2024, abducted him, and pressured him to resign from his position.
In a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Onuorah described the threats he has faced since assuming office, stating:
“On March 29, 2024, at exactly 11:07 am, my residence was invaded by heavily armed individuals claiming to be police officers. They said they were acting on the instructions of HRH Mike Okekeuche. I was abducted and taken to an unknown location, where I was warned to step down as President General so that Igwe’s preferred candidate could take over.”
He further alleged that Tansi and Okonkwo Clement Ugochukwu, both suspected members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), have repeatedly threatened his life, brandishing AK-47 rifles and intimidating local law enforcement.
“Even the local police are afraid of them,” he stated, calling for urgent intervention from the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Abuja.
The controversy has sparked widespread debate within the community. A social media user, identified as Ezeobi, questioned how Tansi managed to evade justice despite his alleged involvement in serious crimes.
With mounting pressure, Onuorah is calling for a full-scale police investigation to uncover the support network shielding individuals like Tansi.
The situation remains tense, with residents anxiously awaiting the authorities’ next move in addressing the security crisis and the alleged complicity of high-ranking figures.
