ABUJA – The Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Senator Nenadi Usman, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using state resources to weaken opposition parties and sow internal discord.
Speaking at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Global Award and Dinner Night in Abuja — through her Senior Special Adviser on Media, Ken Eluma Asogwa — Usman urged opposition leaders to set aside personal ambition and unite in the campaign to prevent President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
She alleged that since assuming power, the APC has engaged in a deliberate effort to suppress dissent and weaken democratic institutions through tactics such as infiltration, harassment, and judicial manipulation.
“The APC cannot claim to uphold democratic ideals while actively working to destabilise parties like the Labour Party,” Usman said. “What we are witnessing is not democracy, but domination disguised as governance.”
She condemned the use of state institutions to intimidate and co-opt opposition members, warning that such strategies pose a threat to Nigeria’s democratic future.
“A system that weaponises state resources to divide and suppress rival parties is not committed to free and fair competition. It is instead invested in authoritarian control,” she added.
While acknowledging APC’s role in destabilising the opposition, Usman stressed that internal divisions have also contributed to the opposition’s weakness.
“Let’s be honest — the problem isn’t just external sabotage. Personal ambition, greed, and infighting have made us vulnerable. No external attack can succeed without internal decay.”
Calling for unity among opposition parties, she emphasised the importance of providing Nigerians with credible alternatives and holding the government accountable.
“Democracy thrives not through silence but through robust debate, critique, and clear alternatives. Without a strong opposition, we are practising a shadow of democracy.”
She urged her colleagues to rise above personal interests and act with patriotism and vision.
“We must stop behaving like victims and start acting like visionaries. Our role is not just to complain, but to rebuild – with shared values, bold ideas, and a firm commitment to Nigeria’s future.”
Usman concluded with a rallying call for collective action and substance-driven leadership.
“We owe Nigerians more than slogans – we owe them solutions. As Mandela said, strong opposition is vital to strong democracy. And as Obama noted, opposition must do more than oppose – it must challenge, propose, and lead.”
