Residents of Igboho in Oorelope Local Government Area of Oyo State erupted in celebration following the reported release of a family allegedly abducted by kidnappers in the community.
The victims, said to include a pregnant woman, her children, and a sibling, were freed just hours after Yoruba Nation activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, issued a two-hour ultimatum demanding their immediate release.
Videos circulating on social media captured jubilant scenes as large crowds gathered in the town, singing and dancing in relief at the family’s safe return.
As of the time of reporting, the exact circumstances leading to the release remained unclear. However, the development came shortly after Igboho directly confronted leaders of the Fulani community in the area over alleged involvement in kidnapping and rising insecurity.
In a widely circulated video, the activist expressed outrage over reports that a pregnant woman and the individual who delivered ransom money were killed during the ordeal.
“The person who brought the ransom, you still killed him and spared only one person,” Igboho said, warning that such acts of kidnapping and killing would no longer be tolerated in Igboho. He noted that he had shown restraint at the request of traditional rulers but made it clear that his patience had limits.
“I am Sunday Igboho. I am calm because my fathers asked me to be calm with you. Let this be the last time such a thing will happen,” he stated.
Igboho subsequently gave community leaders two hours to secure the release of the remaining abducted persons, threatening to take decisive action against suspected hideouts if they failed to comply.
The swift release of the family has been welcomed by residents, though questions linger about the broader security situation in the area.
