Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration of failing to address Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, particularly in Plateau and Borno States.
In a statement shared on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday, Atiku expressed deep sorrow over the recent killing of at least 47 people in Zike village, Kwali district of Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State. He said the attack, coming shortly after similar violence in Bokkos LGA, reflects the alarming deterioration of security across the country.
“I am deeply saddened and alarmed by the resurgence of violent attacks in Plateau State,” he wrote. “It is regrettable and entirely unacceptable that these Nigerians had to lose their lives due to the incompetence of the Tinubu-led administration. The protection of lives and property is the primary responsibility of any government. Unfortunately, President Tinubu has failed these citizens and continues to fail them.”
Atiku also raised concerns about the security situation in Borno State, citing recent warnings from Governor Babagana Zulum and the Shehu of Borno. Both leaders have expressed alarm over the increasing territorial gains by insurgents and the rising death toll.
“These disturbing developments underscore the total collapse of the current administration’s security policy and architecture,” Atiku said.
He further criticized the federal government for its slow pace in prosecuting terrorism suspects, revealing that many arrested as far back as 2016 have yet to face trial.
“If the same level of urgency and energy were devoted to the prosecution of terrorists as we have seen applied to the trials of political critics, we would have sent a clear and forceful message that crime has consequences,” he said.
Atiku called on the Attorney General of the Federation to prioritize terrorism cases and establish special courts to expedite the trials of suspected terrorists and bandits. He also condemned the government’s failure to secure Nigeria’s borders from infiltration by armed groups, calling it a “national disgrace.”
In addition, he urged the National Assembly to enact laws empowering sub-national governments to equip their local security outfits with modern weapons to strengthen Nigeria’s overstretched security forces.
“The people cannot continue to pay the price for government failures,” Atiku said. “Condemnation after the fact is not enough. What is needed are proactive, preventive actions.”
He also emphasized the role of citizens in ensuring national security, encouraging communities to remain vigilant, avoid aiding criminal groups, and collaborate with security agencies by providing timely intelligence.
While commending the bravery and sacrifices of security operatives, Atiku stressed that their efforts must be matched with adequate resources and strategic support.
“May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” he concluded. “We owe them justice, and we owe Nigeria a safer future.”
