Tears flowed freely on Monday morning in Edikwu Ankpali, a community in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State, as a family laid to rest 11 of its members killed in a deadly attack by suspected herdsmen.
The assailants reportedly stormed the community on Sunday evening, opening fire on residents. The attack, which lasted several hours, left over 25 people dead and many others abducted, with no reported intervention from security agencies.
Edikwu, located just a few kilometers from Ugbokpo, the headquarters of Apa LGA, has been left devastated by what locals describe as one of the most brutal assaults in recent times.
A grieving relative, Ben Ekah, described the emotional toll the tragedy has taken. “Burying 11 family members in my village, Ankpali, Apa LGA, is the most agonizing moment for the community today. We are completely overwhelmed and devastated. Scores are in the hospital, and thousands have fled the area,” he said.
Attempts to reach the Benue State Police Command for comments have been unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer, Edet Udeme, did not respond to multiple inquiries.
The community continues to mourn its dead while grappling with the fear and uncertainty left in the wake of the attack.
