Former Senate President, David Mark, has condemned the ongoing attacks in Benue State, warning that the government’s failure to act decisively could leave citizens with no choice but to defend themselves.
In a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser, Paul Mumeh, Mark described the persistent killings as barbaric, inhumane, and unacceptable, expressing deep frustration over what he called a “slow-moving war” against innocent communities.
“This can no longer be tolerated. The government cannot stand idly by while people are slaughtered in their homes,” Mark said. “If this carnage continues unchecked, people may be forced to take matters into their own hands in self-defence.”
He emphasized that the primary duty of any government is to protect lives and property, stressing that prolonged inaction or silence could be seen as complicity and a breakdown of trust between the state and its citizens.
Calling for urgent and decisive intervention, the former Senate President urged the Federal Government to rise to its constitutional responsibility and halt the bloodshed.
He also advised Governor Hyacinth Alia to intensify internal security efforts and strengthen coordination with federal security agencies for better response and protection.
Mark further appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, and local vigilante groups to assist security agencies with intelligence and collaborative efforts to prevent future attacks.
In a message of solidarity, he said, “This is a painful moment for Benue, but we must not allow fear or frustration to divide us. Let’s stand united, support one another, and collectively resist this violence—firmly but within the bounds of the law.”
