The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has linked the recent wave of killings in Benue State to what it described as a broader agenda behind the continued detention of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement issued by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group alleged that the violence in Benue was part of a “genocidal campaign” that exposes the real reason behind Kanu’s arrest, extraordinary rendition, and ongoing incarceration.
“The blood of the innocent victims in Benue is crying out,” the statement read. “The killings have unmasked the sinister motives behind the illegal abduction and detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”
Powerful accused the Nigerian government of using Kanu’s imprisonment as a strategy to clear the path for what he called the “Fulani conquest” of indigenous territories.
He added, “For clarity, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not Nigeria’s problem. He was a shield standing in the gap to protect indigenous peoples from being wiped out by foreign-backed mercenaries disguised as herdsmen.”
The IPOB spokesman reiterated that Kanu had consistently raised alarms over issues such as the RUGA settlement scheme and the controversial Water Resources Bill, describing them as tools aimed at land seizure and suppression of native populations.
According to IPOB, Kanu’s resistance to these policies is what led to his abduction and continued detention, as part of what it calls a larger “Plan B” by powerful interests seeking to dominate native communities.
