Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the ongoing killings in Benue, Kogi, and Taraba States, describing them as a tragic failure of leadership and a threat to national stability.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Obi expressed heartbreak over the persistent violence ravaging the three states and urged the Nigerian government to take immediate and decisive action to restore peace.
“The continued senseless killings in parts of Taraba, Benue, and Kogi are deeply heartbreaking. What we are witnessing is more than violence – it is a glaring failure of leadership and a gaping wound in the soul of our nation,” Obi wrote.
He lamented that children, women, and even religious leaders have become victims of a crisis that has claimed numerous lives and displaced countless families.
“The bloodshed is staggering, yet the response has been weak and muted,” he said. “When communities are destroyed and lawlessness spreads unchecked, we risk normalizing mass killings and the collapse of society.”
Obi stressed that the primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. He warned that repeated failures to uphold this duty raise serious questions about the direction the country is heading.
“I mourn with the people of Benue, Kogi, and Taraba. But I will not stay silent. Silence in the face of such horror is complicity,” he said. “We need urgent action, not empty rhetoric. We need justice, not excuses. Human life must be valued and defended.”
Obi concluded with a call for national awakening: “Nigeria cannot continue like this. This is not the country we deserve. The killings must stop. We must reclaim our humanity. A new Nigeria is POssible.”
