The Anambra State Police Command has pledged to decisively confront any attempts by separatist groups to disrupt peace during the proposed Biafra Day celebration on Friday, May 30, 2025.
In anticipation of possible unrest, some schools across the state have declared Friday a lecture-free day following threats allegedly issued by pro-Biafra agitators.
In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police assured residents that strategic deployments have been made across key areas of the state to maintain peace and public safety. Popular junctions and hotspots in cities such as Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, Ihiala, and Oraifite are now under increased surveillance and patrols.
Ikenga disclosed that a high-level security meeting involving heads of various security agencies in the state had taken place in preparation for the “illegal Biafra Day celebration being orchestrated by criminal elements.”
“The Police-led Joint Security Force—which includes operatives from the DSS, NSCDC, FRSC, the Nigerian Army, and the Navy—has intensified patrol operations and taken over strategic locations to deter any criminal activity and ensure the safety of lives and property,” he stated.
According to Ikenga, the joint presence of security personnel is intended to reassure the public, discourage acts of violence, and maintain normalcy across communities.
He further noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has commended residents of Anambra for their continued support and cooperation in rejecting any movement or activity that threatens the state’s peace and stability.
In an effort to encourage community participation in maintaining security, the police have shared contact numbers of divisional heads across the state and urged citizens to report any suspicious activity or breaches of peace.
