The Chairman of the House Committee on Monitoring and Evaluation of House Standing and Ad Hoc Committees, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has called for the immediate reconstitution of the Presidential Committee on Population and Housing Census, citing the exclusion of the South-East from its membership.
Aguocha, who represents Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, said the credibility of the upcoming population census is already being undermined by the lopsided composition of the committee.
“If the process is questionable, there’s no way the results of the population census will be credible, fair, or acceptable,” he told journalists. “A credible census is vital for equitable resource distribution, balanced development, and national planning. But when certain regions are excluded, it calls the integrity of the entire exercise into question.”
He urged President Bola Tinubu to reconstitute the committee in line with the principles of federal character to ensure inclusivity and national acceptance of the census results.
President Tinubu had, through his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, inaugurated the Presidential Committee on Population and Housing Census on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. The committee is chaired by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, while the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Mr. Nasir Isa Kwarra, serves as Secretary.
Other members include the Minister of Information, Alhaji Mohammed Idris Malagi; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun; Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji; Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote; Principal Private Secretary to the President, Hakeem Muri-Okunola; and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Administration and Operations (Office of the Chief of Staff), Mrs. Nathan-Marsh.
Nigeria last conducted a national census in 2006, which recorded a population of approximately 140 million. The process was widely criticised for alleged irregularities and regional biases.
