President Bola Tinubu has condemned the rising cases of bullying in Nigerian schools, describing the practice as unacceptable and harmful to the development of children.
In a statement issued Tuesday morning to mark the 2025 National Children’s Day, President Tinubu stressed the importance of creating safe and supportive environments for learning. This year’s theme is “Stand Up, Speak Up: Building a Bullying-Free Generation.”
“A child who learns in fear cannot learn well, and a child who grows in fear cannot grow right,” the President said, highlighting the negative impact bullying has on the physical and emotional wellbeing of children.
Citing global data, Tinubu noted that more than one in three children worldwide experience bullying regularly. In Nigeria, studies suggest that as many as 65% of school-age children have faced some form of physical, psychological, or social aggression.
In his heartfelt message addressed directly to Nigerian children, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to their protection and wellbeing.
“My dear children, the pride and future of our great nation, I join you to celebrate the 2025 National Children’s Day with immense pride and profound joy. On this special day, I reaffirm our duty to nurture and protect you as the future leaders, innovators, and changemakers of Nigeria,” he said.
He added that children are the “most precious part of our national fabric, the heartbeat of our future, and the custodians of tomorrow’s promise, innovation, and leadership.”
President Tinubu also outlined several key policies aimed at safeguarding the rights and welfare of Nigerian children. These include the implementation of Nigeria’s National Plan of Action on Ending Violence Against Children (2024–2030), which he said offers a roadmap to prevent abuse, prosecute offenders, and support victims through multi-sectoral coordination and robust funding.
“We are taking decisive steps to prevent, detect, and respond to all forms of violence against children,” Tinubu stated. “This includes a comprehensive review of the Child Rights Act (2003) and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (2015) to expand protections and close implementation gaps.”
He further emphasized that the government is leveraging the Cybercrime Act to protect children from online threats such as cyberbullying, exploitation, and abuse.
“Violence, bullying, and neglect have no place in the Nigeria of today,” the President declared.
