The Federal High Court in Abuja has barred Mrs. Favour Kanu, sister-in-law to detained Biafra separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu, from attending further court proceedings after she was found livestreaming the trial on social media.
The incident occurred on Thursday shortly after Justice James Omotosho delivered a ruling on a “trial within trial” — a mini-hearing to determine the admissibility of statements Kanu claimed he made under duress.
Raising concerns about the unauthorized broadcast, Justice Omotosho presented printed images showing live footage of the court session. He described the act as subjudice and a contempt of court, stating it undermines the sanctity and decorum of judicial proceedings.
In a dramatic turn, the judge directly confronted Mrs. Kanu, who admitted to livestreaming the proceedings. The court noted that she had been previously warned multiple times against such conduct.
As a result, Justice Omotosho ordered her immediate removal from the courtroom and barred her from accessing the premises unless she has an active case before the court. The judge warned that moving forward, anyone found in contempt would be remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre.
Meanwhile, senior advocate and member of Kanu’s legal team, Paul Erokoro (SAN), drew the court’s attention to a televised report aired on May 28, 2025. The report falsely claimed that the court had played a video showing Kanu inspecting a smuggled radio transmitter.
Justice Omotosho refuted the claim, affirming that no such video was presented in court on that date. He urged lawyers to formally raise such matters through proper legal channels, reiterating his commitment to upholding courtroom discipline: “I want to be sending people to Kuje henceforth,” he warned.
