The Court of Appeal in Ibadan has adjourned the appeal filed by the University of Ibadan (UI) and its principal officers against a lower court judgment favouring a postgraduate student, Mr. Kayode Bello, until October 29, 2026.
Bello, who is conducting his case in person, had pleaded with the appellate court for an expedited hearing, warning that further delay could jeopardise his chances of participating in the university’s November 2026 convocation ceremony. The dispute stems from Bello’s alleged exclusion from graduation after completing his Master’s degree programme in Communication and Language Arts.
In October 2025, Justice Evelyn Maha of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, ruled in his favour, directing the university to reopen his student portal and permit him to graduate.
Dissatisfied with the judgment, the University of Ibadan, its Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Provost of the Postgraduate College, and other officials filed an appeal. The matter came up before Justice Georgewill Abraham on July 3, following a previous adjournment for court-ordered mediation.
According to Bello, the mediation session held on July 1 before the Deputy Chief Registrar, Mrs. Maryam Belgore, ended without resolution. He alleged that the registrar threatened to assign a longer hearing date if he did not cooperate and displayed bias towards the university’s legal team. These claims, however, are yet to be independently verified.
The legal tussle between Bello and the institution began at the Federal High Court in 2022 and has remained unresolved despite the favourable ruling at the lower court.
Counsel to the appellants include Messrs. Frederick Ladapo, Akinade Adesokan, and Tomoloju Benjamin from the law firm of the late Chief Ladosu Ladapo (SAN). The case will now be heard substantively on October 29.
