Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, has accused the Federal Government of practicing selective justice following a criminal charge filed against her.
It was reported that the Federal Government, in mid-May, instituted legal action against the senator over alleged defamatory remarks made during a live television broadcast.
The suit, marked CR/297/25, was filed on May 16, 2025, at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, naming Akpoti-Uduaghan as the sole defendant.
According to court documents, the senator is accused of making statements with the intent — or reasonable belief — that such comments would harm the reputation of another individual. The charges are based on Section 391 of the Penal Code, Cap 89, Laws of the Federation, 1990, and are punishable under Section 392.
In a statement signed by her lawyer, Uju Nwoduwu, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team raised concerns about what they described as a clear case of bias. The statement revealed that between March and May 2025, the senator submitted twelve separate petitions to law enforcement agencies — all of which, they claim, remain unacknowledged and uninvestigated.
“These petitions involve serious allegations, including cyberstalking, threats to life, defamation, and even an assassination plot,” the legal team noted. “Yet, no action has been taken by the Nigeria Police Force or any relevant security body.”
The team expressed dismay that while Senator Natasha’s petitions have been ignored, counter-allegations from individuals she petitioned — including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello — have been acted upon with urgency.
“This selective response raises serious concerns about impartiality and the fair administration of justice,” the statement read.
Further, the legal team disclosed that some of the petitions submitted included allegations of abduction and attempted assassination of a protocol officer, with links to high-profile individuals.
They confirmed that the senator, who is currently outside the country on personal engagements, has officially received communication regarding the charges.
While expressing appreciation for the public outcry that has followed the criminal charge, the team called for fairness and warned against sustained injustice.
