Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence in neighbouring Benue State, warning that the insecurity could spread into Cross River if not urgently addressed.
Speaking on the floor of the Assembly on Monday, Ayambem urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to act decisively in confronting the persistent killings and growing terrorism in Benue State and other affected areas.
The Assembly observed a minute of silence in honour of over 200 villagers recently killed and burned by suspected insurgents in a Benue community. Ayambem described the incident as a tragedy that reflects the worsening security crisis in parts of the country.
“The mayhem in Benue and nearby Niger State has become intolerable. The killings must stop, and the perpetrators must be brought to justice,” he said. “There is an urgent need to strengthen security in border communities to prevent a spillover of violence into Cross River.”
The Speaker appealed to President Tinubu, who is scheduled to visit Benue State on Tuesday, to take concrete and immediate actions to curb the growing insecurity.
While sympathizing with the government and people of Benue, Ayambem renewed the call for the swift establishment of state police, arguing that it would enhance the capacity of states to detect and contain security threats at the local level.
“Delaying the establishment of state police is no longer acceptable. With local policing, strange elements infiltrating communities can be quickly identified and addressed,” he stated.
Ayambem concluded by emphasizing that all Nigerian lives must be treated equally, stressing that “no Nigerian is more Nigerian than another.”
